    Name:
    Nature spirit

    A flying magical coral.

These harmless small pack creatures fly around and soak up magical energy in the surrounding area. The absorbed magic affects their shape and color to more resemble their surroundings. The tips of the paws and tail glow. Their large are eyes like pure black pearls.

If provoked, they explode with magical energy to ward of predators, then flee.
When they die, they turn into a concentrated manifestation of their magic: forest spirits turn into moss, fire spirits turn into fire crystals, and so on.

Finding one is a sign of clean nature.
It does not take much pollutants to corrupt the creature into a hideous grey oozing tentacle beast. In this state they can’t fly, can climb any surface, grow rapidly in size, become very aggressive, attack and grab with their tentacles any animal passing by, and eventually harden into grotesque solid shape.
Such abominations don't like light, and can create truly unsettling deep cave wall decorations.

    Name:
    Nightmare Shepherd

Appearance: See picture. May have some other head gear and band on the eyes. The eyes on the tip of the staff are constantly moving. When he moves idly, he acts like he's leaning on the staff, dragging the chains behind him, but when aiming at some target, he hovers smoothly as fast as he needs.
    - Dreadhound: Grey, rotting fur; flattened muzzle with a hint of human countenance; long, sabre-like fangs and extremely long tongue allows them to easily get to the victims' innards and drag them out.
    - Nightshade: A shadow in the darkness, halfway between human and spider shape – basically human head and torso on 4 spider legs and other 4 as arms (two much longer), with spider-like jaw.

Distribution: Night time, preys randomly on villages and towns – the bigger the settlement, the stronger the Shepherd. So when u hear howling and clanking when in town, be prepared to meet the Shepherd!

Attack and defense: Shepherds appear individually, but are accompanied by one or two Dreadhounds and bunch of Nightshades. Their strength depends on how many sleeping people they manage to posses using the Nightshades. When they appear they send their minion forward to subdue minds of sleeping and then feed on their fear. While Nightshades provide the Shepherd with terrified minds, Dreadhounds terrorize those who don't sleep and protect their master. Some of the possessed sleeping may go insane and rise as Nightwalkers – human body with Nightshade in it – and attack other living creatures together with hounds. Shepherd can protect himself by pouring fear into attacker's mind, causing them to flee in panic or be unable to defend themselves. He can also use the shackles to immobilize target while hounds are doing their biting and clawing job. Most of his strength comes from the mind powers – so he can manipulate others with illusions either soothing them, setting against each other, or simply giving them visions so terrible, they claw their eyes out themselves.
Most efficient way to deal with Shepherd is to get rid of as many Nightshades as possible before engaging the Shepherd himself (and he knows, when a Nightshade is destroyed and will seek the intruder), since every minion provides him with additional strength. Other way is waiting till dawn somewhere safe, but in the morning it may appear that half of the settlement is either dead or lost their minds to Nightshades...

    Name:
    Strangler

    Appearance: See picture.

Distribution: Jungle and similar regions – where they can attack from above.

Attack and defense: Wandering around alone or in small groups. They attack from ambush, preferably from branches or rocks above victim, aiming to wrap their long, strong tail around it's neck, strangle it and drag up among the leaves, where they can consume their prey uninterrupted.
In fight their main weapon are their tails, supported by long-fingered, highly prehensive paws and needle-like teeth. They can for example cling to the victims back and and perform a classic attempt to strangle it or work in group, immobilizing victims limbs and tearing it's throat.
Their main defense is their speed and agility – if pressed too hard, they simply flee into thicket to regroup and attack again from behind.

    Name:
    Wild Goatherd

Appearance: From afar looks like any other goatherd – peasant clothes, staff, ruffled beard. Only when you get closer, you can see the madness in the eyes and pointy teeth.
    - Wild Goat: From afar looks like regular goat. But when you look one in the eye, you will see demonic flame burning there.

Distribution: Unique creature, roams the countryside. Beware if u hear strange, half-human bleating coming from the thicket!

Attack and defense: Wild Goatherd walks around with his demonic herd, carrying away livestock to join his minions or killing it. His animals trample or eat out crops and soil roads.
His main strength both in attack and defense are his goats (together with any livestock he got on his way), attacking madly anything their master make them attack. He's got minor powers of mind control, but not strong enough for most humans – may interrupt casting spell or stun attacker for a brief second, but nothing more. He relies more on surprise and catching victims unaware in the middle of the Wild Goats herd, where they get trampled and gored (also scratched, bitten etc. depending on what animals joined the herd). He can also use his staff as a weapon, but he's no melee master and even strength and endurance, both slightly increased by demonic influence, don't do him much good.

    Name:
    Rulakh (aka grave golem)

Appearance: This golem consists mainly of dry grave earth that’s covered by dried moss. The remainder of the deceased and parts of the graveyard (gravestones, plants, urns) on which he has been summoned (see distribution) have turned into parts of its body. A shroud often covers the “face” and only a pair of lifeless white eyes can be seen.

Distribution: The Rulakh is the work of a necromancer. However he is not simply a reanimated being, rather the necromancer has to sacrifice himself to create the Rulakh. The soul of the necromancer passes into him and so breathes life into it. This ritual draws any kind of energy from the surrounding area, of which for necromantic ends most are provided by the dead. (In addition all water is drawn from the surroundings leading to the dried earth and vegetation.) Hence such a ritual is usually executed on a graveyard at night. (The risk being interrupted would be too high during the day). What it is that drives a necromancer to such a deed seems incomprehensible to many, but according to well-informed circles, a Rulakh ritual while giving the necromancer a new physical form also grants him immortality, if he goes the way.

Attack and defense: As a Rulakh is not simply a mindless fighting machine, but also had the powers of the necromancer transferred into, can and will he raise the dead in a battle, so that those can fight for him. His strength still should not be underestimated; with fierce blows he can cause his enemies a lot of trouble. Sharp weapons hardly are able to defeat a Rulakh due to his robust body. It takes a lot of blunt force, but it can bring him down. The least resistant, however, is the Rulakh against magic, which can draw heavily from his life energy. The Rulakh leeches the energy of his defeated enemies, prolonging his life duration. He gives off few sounds, but if you get close to the shroud covering his face, far cries can be heard. Are they the voices of fallen opponents or disgorged remorse of a necromancer?

Name Morbus Noctem (lat. morbus = sickness; lat. noctem = night)

    General
Origin The first Morbus Noctem probably was a drift-mutated fugitive from Sedhannia who has fallen victim to the terror of Gaihaen. He is called Morbus Noctem Gaihaen. There are no pictures of him and only vague descriptions.
    Size appr. 3 Imperial Cubits
Gender Male and female, where as with the Chroniclers, the first humans on Aetherra, only the female Morbus Noctem can reproduce (see procreation)
Strengths The Morbus Noctem is a very efficient hunter at night. It is advisable to stay clear from this creature during that time of the day.
Social behavior Fortunately the Morbus Noctem prefers to be solitary and engages with his peers in territorial fights. A territory of a Morbus Noctem can encompass up to ten Cambrian Miles.
Habitat The habitat of the Morbus Noctem Gaihaen lies in the west of Aetherra on the Plains of Gaihaen. Due to the influence of the Drift and the darkness, the Morbus Noctem has been spotted also in Sedhannia in the North and even further up to Kalatas. Influenced by their environment, these have adapted and have some slightly differing characteristics. So can the Morbus Noctem of Kalatas also be met during twilight or dim light. Their black eyes also have a ice-blue iris ring.

    Appearance
Hair Teal colored, felted, with souvenirs of its victims. These mostly consist of the heads of native bird or sucked out bones that serve as finger rings.
Eyes Black as the darkness Gaihaens with a blazing ice-blue iris ring.
Lips Full, nightblue almost black appearing lips.
Teeth The teeth are inconspicuous and slightly pointed.
Skin The skin of a Morbus Noctem has a slight blue-greenish tine and seems somewhat translucent. It’s possible to clearly see the thick web of veins under the skin, which can be ascribed to the avoidance of the sunlight. At times, the skin shows unevenness with deep craters that look like open wounds. A particular feature are ulcers that spread in fine, spidery webs over the skin and can grow into stings and keratin plates. This hardening of the skin is observed best on shoulders, underarms, hands and chest.
Body Arms and legs have fine, protruding keratin plates, that have formed by skin ulcers. They serve primarily for defense as its hands are the Morbus Noctems murder weapons and so they are most vulnerable to damage.
The Morbus Noctem usually wears no clothing as its skin (partially keratinized) offers enough protection. Otherwise, the clothes come from its victims. Popular are light clothing like tunics. In addition, parts of the victims are used for jewelery. These are ie. skulls.
Hands The Morbus Noctem has no nails but claw-like hands that are especially robust and deadly due to the hardened skin.

    Abilities
Visual abilities The Morbus Noctem has excellent eyesight in darkness, but direct light sources strongly impair his vision. Unlike his ancestors from Gaihaen, the Morbus Noctem Gaihaen, he is able to see to some extend during dusk and dawn and is at these times indeed dangerous. The sunlight doesn’t kill him, but due to the pale, translucent skin, he is prone to skin irritations by excessive sun radiation that can cause severe sunburn.
Hunting/attack The hunting behavior is particularlyclever. In order to lure his victims, he pours out beautiful little glowing and enchanted flying discs. Weightless and elegant, these innocent objects hover through the air, though they are far from innocent. By rubbing of its fine hairs, it can imitate sounds, melodies and even voices. With the help of the voice imitation, the disc lures the victim to a dark place. This is preferably a cave or a forest. The Morbus Noctem has the ability to morph himself or parts of himself. This enables him to shape his arms into tendrils and thus render the victim immobile. The tendrils can also exist autonomously from the Morbus Noctem and meld back into it at a later point. If the Morbus Noctem encounters resistance, he uses his claws. He mostly attacks by ambushing and avoids direct confrontation.
Food The main food of the Morbus Noctem are bodily fluids, that is blood and spinal fluid of his victims. However, he also consumes solid food (raw flesh). This is mostly the flesh of little animals (ie. birds, small monkeys).
Defense Attentive readers may wonder why this creature carries the name Morbus (sickness). This has an easy explanation. As the Morbus Noctem is highly vulnerable against sunlight as mentioned, he would be an easy prey during the day if he could not find a place of retreat. This is why he has a “special” gift for his victims. After they have been rendered immobile, he seduces and kisses them. In doing so, he orally inserts a germ while sucking their bodily fluids. Because of the high blood loss, the victim dehydrates with acute anemia which ends in the loss of consciousness or is even, in rare cases, fatal.
In this limited phase of vital abilities, the germ grows ideally and changes the genetic code of the host. When awakening, the victim has his thoughts and memories but is under the mental control of the Morbus Noctem. It also has a slightly increased hearing and eyesight as well as increased physical strength. Outwardly, it’s hardly possible to tell them apart from a human, but they are often exposed by their neglected appearance. For this lackey serves and exists only for the Morbus Noctem. His task is the protection of the Morbus Noctem, which at times leads to the lackey staying in dark forests and caves, as well.
Procreation The Morbus Noctem procreates parasitically. For this, the victim has to have the right genetic coding. The victims (regardless of their gender) then mutate not to a lackey but to a breeder. The genetic information then are crossed with those of the Morbus Noctem and create a new Morbus Noctem that grows insight the breeder and feeds on him until the newborn peels itself out of the shell of the breeder. A newborn is quite tall measuring two Imperial Cubits and is familiar with parts of the memories of the Morbus Noctem. The young Morbus Noctem then has only little time to leave the place of its birth otherwise it would be killed.

    Worth knowing
The night of the summer solstice is commonly known as the day of the “harvest”. It is when, despite the shortened night, the female Morbus Noctem go out to find suitable hosts as breeders so that their offspring reaches maturity in winter. The weeks preceding summer solstice is when Morbus Noctem are especially active in collecting enough food to create a breeder as this is very debilitating and time-consuming.
The time when the Morbus Noctem insight the breeder reaches maturity falls into the week before winter solstice when the nights are the longest. In this time begins the “migration” of the young Morbus Noctem and insight their hunting grounds extreme caution should be exercised. Fortunately, the “harvest” and the “migration” only happen every five years. This is also called the Gaihaen Cycle.
It’s a sad fact that in the rural areas around Gaihaen, locals are burned alive for fear that they could mutate into a breeder after the “harvest”. This is commonly known as “cleansing” and a remainder of the barbaric rituals in the times of the Chroniclers.

    Name:
    Bark Behemoth

Appearance:The Bark Behemoth is a gigantic enemy. Compared to an animal from the human world, it mostly resembles a whale – though it doesn’t consist of skin and bones. His skin is brown, twisted and hard like the bask of an old tree. His body seems to be carved from a single trunk, his four thick legs resemble tree trunks with hanging roots.
On his shoulder blades and knees grow thick plates of bark that are intended as weapons as well as for defense. On his back grows moss and smaller plants that have settled here thinking him to be a common tree.
His throat and belly are soft and resemble the underside of a common whale – only here it’s possible to hurt a Bark Behemoth as the bark-like skin on the rest of his body is hard and thick.

Distribution: The Bark Behemoth can be found everywhere where there’s a forest with trees that have grown close together. If there is also an ocean nearby he feels the most comfortable, for the Bark Behemoth originally came from the sea and has developed from the common whales of the human world. But as Bark Behemoths have reproduced more and more, the oceans became too small for them and they have conquered the land. Fins became legs and in order to better conceal themselves in the woods, these legs turned into trunk-like means of transport.
The Bark Behemoth can be found at all times of the day, however he keeps away from direct sunlight, and thus hunts during the day only in shady forests.

Attack and defense: The Bark Behemoth hunts solitary; he is clearly a loner. When coming across this monster, it first takes away your breath because it’s just so gigantically huge. But with a few tricks, it’s possible to gain control in a fight with a Bark Behemoth.
Due to its dimensions, the Bark Behemoth moves very slowly and carefully. He rather waits until you are very close before attacking. He often also hides behind trees and literally waits for you to walk into his mouth – his optimal disguise makes him very hard to spot on first sight.
If it has actually come to a fight with a Bark Behemoth, he mostly attacks with his large legs, trying to trample you to death. When standing in front of his open throat, he can bite with his many teeth or simply devour you.
The best is to meet him with fire; thanks to his bark-like skin this is something he should avoid. He depends most on his strong defense and the impenetrability of his skin than on a tactically well thought out attack.

    Name:
    Moiranis

    Appearance: see picture

Distribution: throughout the whole of Aetherra

Attack: A bite that generally is fatal. His teeth are full of bacteria and when wounding its prey, an infection (often paralyzing) occurs.
To escape from a Moiranis is almost impossible. Alone well established “disguise skills” offer the chance of survival once a Moiranis has been set upon a victim with “Fassonio.”
The Moiranis possesses an extremely high bred “man-trailing” skill – a specialty of the breeders in the catacombs of Verria.
Otherwise they behave in a peaceful manner towards other beings and are harmless until attacked. Will pursue its victim until its own death if necessary.

Defense: Bites wildly and uncontrolled during an attack. Can also run very fast and persistently.

Its history: It began around the year 771 in the calendar of the emperors-elect, when the great Dominions in their struggle for the succession to the throne didn’t notice how in the neighborhood of Ancya-Al-Mar a crack to the old spheres of magic, a dark shadow – also called the Drift – began to make its way to still its unbridled hunger for weak souls and to form the remaining lifeless casks after its will, to enslave them and subdue them.
No one in Ancya-Al-Mar noticed the approaching disaster.
Even the old resident veterinarian for animals of all kinds – old medicus Nostrimadis – thought nothing of it when more and more residents of Ancya-Al-Mar and the surrounding area brought him animals that displayed changed behavior.
The small and cute Aye Aye, kept in the hundrets as pets by the nobles of Ancya-Al-Mar and favored toy for the ladies of the court and their children, displayed a strange behavior that robbed medicus Nostrimadis of his sleep for many nights.
This small animals started to bite their owners and to steal from them and with every day, it got worse and worse.
It was just at this time that a merchant from Verria arrived at Ancya-Al-Mar. His goods were excellent and expensive. He even had some rare pieces of armor made from the skin of the Canavarudus that live in the depth of the Chasm of Dimona on offer.
But his most valuable items were the litter of Moiranis.
He had 7 young puppies with him that had been bred in the mysterious catacombs of Verria.
It was no secret – all of Aetherra knew – that these animals, once they had picked up a scent and given the command “Fassonio!” would follow this scent and nothing and no one could be able to keep them from following it.
In secret, it was whispered that even the souls of the Moiranis would keep following the scent until the victim had been apprehended. The richest nobles from Ancya-Al-Mar literally pried the Moiranis from the merchant’s hands and once they had reached maturity, used them as effective hunters against the Aye Aye.
But the dark shadow also changed he Moiranis – unnoticed – and as they bred and for the first time a litter puppies saw the light of Ancya-Al-Mar, it greatly scared the population.
The proud Moiranis that had once been bred in the catacombs of Verria had become drifted monsters from Ancya-Al-Mar.
Since those times only few reckless ‘treasure hunters’ have bought Moiranis and supposedly, it’s mostly ‘gamblers’ that roam Aetherra accompanied by some Moiranis and on the hunt for Aye Aye, wherever they can be found.

    Name: Yellow Araneo

    Appearance: see picture

    Distribution: Eltay Forest

Attack: Possesses a pronounced mimesis with the help of which he can ‘merge’ with his surroundings and become almost invisible. His preferred surroundings are forests.
There his victim is grabbed with both gripping arms and halved with the jaw claws.
The victims die so quickly that they don’t even realize they’re dying.

Defense: At times, spits poisonous phlegm onto his victims that corrode away armor. Skin contact is fatal. A keratin cover on its body protects against physical damage with the exception of its belly. Flights on trees or tries to disguise with mimesis.

Its history: The dark shadows of the Drift also cover Eltay Forest. Many Great-emperors that once used the forest for hunting, now avoid it.
Gruesome stories are told at gatherings. It is said that there are strange creatures in the forest that in the dim light of crooked trees, hanging from their tails, let themselves fall on unaware travelers and forest workers and poison them with a well-aimed bite.
Reverently this ghastly creature is called the ‘black Scartarius’.
But in Eltay Forest, a far more dangerous creature lurks.
To this creature the black Scartarius leaves its prey without fight when it comes to a meeting between those two monsters.
Equipped with eight legs, two gripping arms and two bone-breaking jaws, he is the undisputed ruler of Eltay Forest. His body is covered by a warty keratin layer which no sword or spear can penetrate. However, even though his eight legs can carry him quickly about, they’re at the same time his weak spot.
A Blademaster was able, after a long fight, to cut off all eight legs. Only then he could turn the monster around and deliver the fatal blow to the unprotected belly.
The bone-breaking jaws are often boned as they obtain high prices on the market.
    Beware of Eltay Forest.
You may direct your eyes upwards, but something much more terrible lurks behind the trees.

    Name: Canavarudus

    Appearance: see picture

    Distribution: Chasm of Dimona

Attack: Thanks to his 100% night vision, the Canavarudus stalks its prey in complete darkness, jumps on it and pushes it to the ground with its heavy weight. It takes care of the rest with a bite of his saber-teeth and a jaw he can open at a 90 degree angle.

Defense: Almost insensitive to pain. If necessary it retreats into the complete darkness of its cave system in the Chasm of Dimona.

Its history: The Chasm of Dimona is a place of terror and nasty surprises.
The first Chroniclers report that Aureth was not able to complete his work as dark shadows spread over parts of his creation.
Left behind in the completely dark caves, a monster lives since those days that over time adapted perfectly to this unreal place.
Even Chasm Vampires avoid this dark area of many interconnected caves.
Without a sufficient supply of torches these caves can’t be entered.
Should a brave adventure make his way past the Chasm Vampires and indeed make it to the first, completely dark cave, he is there awaited by an enemy that can’t feel any pain. Neither cuts nor burns or acid can bother it.
If, however, the adventurer manages to kill one of these monster, he does good in quickly skinning it, as it’s skin is weighted in gold.
Leather armor made from this skin transfer the abilities of the monster onto the wearer.
No sword or arrow can penetrate it, no fire causes damage and acids drips from this armor like water.
One bold adventuress managed to reach the entrance of a cave.
Since then there has been no sign of life from her.
Maybe she managed to hunt one (or more) of these hunters, for sporadically, pieces of armors surface at a merchant that are unaffordable. Only perfect Aye Aye hunters might be able to capture this unthinkable amount from the Aye Aye.

Heart of these creatures have become stale, and the once neutral creatures have become ruthless and cruel. The reason these monsters dimmed, and the veins were filled with poison.

Distribution: To meet these monsters, you can nearby the mountain, near the mines or quarries.

    Name: An'Mahtoll (aka ice-blood wolf)

Appearance: The An’Mathtoll look like a mixture of wolf and bat. They have a thick fur, large, upright ears and teeth that are a bit smaller than those of a wolf. The Dhyadayn have wrapped pieces of fabric around the hind-legs to show its owner.

Distribution: The An’Mahtoll once were the loyal companions of the Dhyadayn before those had to flee into regions where the An’Mahtoll couldn’t follow. They stayed at the feet of the mountains and formed wild packs. The An’Mahtoll know that in this region they need all the food they can get and thus they’re organized in such a way that there’s always part of the pack on hunt.

Attack and defense: An An’Mahtoll never hunts alone. That’s something they can’t afford in this region. Their strength emerges in the group.
They are quiet and agile and watch their prey from some distance, though they aren’t at all picky when it comes to prey. The subject is surrounded and then slowly attacked.
You never know which of the An’Mahtoll will attack first, which makes defending against them harder. The An’Mahtoll themselves can’t withstand much, they try to avoid any kind of injury helped by their good hearing, their small build and their speed.
